Designing a Campaign That Stands Out

2 min read

When Laura Zeman reached out to KC Designs for help with her school board trustee campaign, the goal was simple: create a campaign identity that would be recognizable, approachable and impossible to miss.

Campaign materials need to work quickly. Whether someone is driving past a roadside sign, picking up a rack card at a community event, or seeing campaign graphics online, there are only a few seconds to make an impression.

For Laura's campaign, I created a cohesive visual direction across her campaign signage and rack cards, with a focus on strong typography, high contrast and a bold colour palette.

The result is a campaign that feels modern, professional and memorable while keeping Laura's name front and centre.

Making the Campaign Stand Out

For campaign signage, especially roadside signs, readability is everything.

Laura's campaign needed to communicate her name and role clearly from a distance, so I focused on a simple visual hierarchy with:

  • Laura Zeman as the primary focal point

  • Large, bold typography

  • A strong navy and cream colour combination

  • A bright blue accent for visual energy

  • Minimal supporting information

  • A clean, recognizable layout that works at a glance

The goal wasn't to fill the sign with information. It was to create something people would see, recognize and remember.

From Campaign Signs to Rack Cards

The same visual identity was carried through to Laura's rack cards, giving the campaign a consistent look across different print materials.

Rack cards have a little more room to communicate, so they can introduce the candidate, share key campaign messaging and give people something tangible to take with them.

Keeping the same colours, typography and overall design language means that every piece feels like part of the same campaign rather than a collection of unrelated materials.

Designing for Real-World Campaigns

Political and community campaigns have a unique design challenge. The materials need to stand out, but they also need to feel trustworthy and accessible.

A campaign sign might be viewed:

  • From a passing vehicle

  • Across a busy intersection

  • Among dozens of other signs

  • On a lawn or community property

  • In a photo shared online

That means good campaign design isn't just about making something attractive. It has to work in the real world.

That's where thoughtful typography, contrast, spacing and visual hierarchy make a difference.

Campaign Graphic Design on Vancouver Island

As a Vancouver Island graphic designer, I work with small businesses, organizations and local projects throughout the region.

From individual signs to a complete set of campaign materials, the goal is always the same:

Create something that looks like you, communicates clearly and gets noticed.
