This project involved helping a young, local author transform a hand-drawn graphic novel, originally created on lined notebook paper, into a professionally formatted book ready for print and distribution on Amazon KDP.

The Goals

The goal wasn’t just to “design a book”, it was to support a first-time publishing experience while preserving what made the project special.

The Approach

With a project like this, the challenge is balancing technical precision with creative sensitivity.

Rebuilt the entire book layout in Adobe InDesign using a 6" x 9" format aligned with Amazon KDP specs
Processed and placed scanned artwork, ensuring proper sizing, alignment, and print resolution
Structured pages as single-page layouts while preserving the flow of illustrated scenes across spreads
Designed the full cover (front, spine, and back) using Amazon’s exact template measurements
Provided guidance on scanning settings and file preparation to improve overall quality
Created mockups and visuals to support marketing beyond the Amazon listing

From Sketchbook to Print

The original artwork was scanned page by page, which introduced a number of technical challenges - file size limitations, resolution inconsistencies, and formatting for print.

Each page needed to be carefully reviewed, adjusted, and placed into a consistent layout system that would translate well from screen to print.

Because the story included illustrated scenes that spanned across two pages, extra care was taken to ensure those moments aligned properly once printed without disrupting the natural reading flow.

Designing for Amazon Publishing

Publishing through Amazon KDP comes with very specific requirements, especially for print books.

This included:

Setting correct trim size and margins
Ensuring all artwork met minimum 300 DPI resolution
Formatting files as single pages (not spreads)
Preparing a full cover layout with exact spine width calculations

Getting these details right is critical, not just for approval, but for the final printed quality.

Preserving the Original Style

One of the most important parts of this project was not over-designing it.

The lined paper, hand lettering, and raw illustrations are part of what make the book unique. Instead of refining those elements away, the focus was on supporting them - cleaning up placement, improving clarity, and making sure they printed well without losing their personality.
